Staying connected

Well, it’s been a crazy few months for me and its finally great to be back blogging!

Juggling my television hosting role in Discover Downunder with co host Tim Smith along with speaking engagements, appearances, promotions, photo shoots, commercials & continued work for my sponsors and ambassador roles has kept me extremely busy!

The Australian Swimming Championships are on at the moment and although I love cheering on my former team mates, I’m very happy that I’m not competing.

Yes, you have heard the official word from me: there will be No COMEBACK, ha ha!!

Throughout my time on the swim team I learnt about time management and it’s without doubt that I use those skills on a daily basis in my life beyond the pool.

I’m loving the challenges of being a mum and already can’t believe my little baby Cooper is almost one and a half. The skills I learnt throughout my swimming career have definitely given me a headstart when it comes to being super organised.

Staying in touch with family and friends is so important when you’re on the road every week living out of a suitcase and eating whatever healthy airport food you can find.

Being connected with Telstra through my iPhone 4 gives me the comfort I need to help me feel I’m not missing out. The Face Time feature is great so I can still read my son bed time stories and have a chat to my husband whilst seeing both of them after a long day of filming.

Flight mode is fantastic so I can still tap out emails whilst in the air & listen to my favorite tunes at the same time.

Technology is so important to staying connected and it’s great that I’m reconnecting with my blog thanks to Telstra!

Keep Smiling

Following the Sun

I really enjoyed my road trip as ambassador for the Dometic Follow The Sun competition over the past few weeks.  My mum joined my baby boy Cooper and myself for a road trip on the NSW North Coast and the Gold Coast.

As part of the Follow The Sun competition the winners hosted Happy Hours at Top Tourist caravan parks and I loved going along to host the parties. We have visited Ballina, Broken Head, Byron Bay, Nambucca Heads, Coffs Harbour and Arrawarra.

The finale was held on September 15th at the Broadwater Tourist Park at Southport on the Gold Coast we had a huge turn out and gave away hundreds of prizes courtesy of Dometic Waeco.

The competition has been a great success and it’s been so much fun to catch up with the three different winning couples throughout the 13 week trip around different parts of Australia.

It’s exciting that all the caravan and campers I have met are enjoying the newest series of Discover Downunder which myself and my co host Tim Smith have so much fun filming.

Whilst on the Gold Coast I made my way to Couran Cove Island Resort for the Sleepy’s Mattress annual conference for a key note speech. I was very honoured to been named as Sleepy’s newest ambassador and really enjoyed speaking to the group about my experiences in sport and business and I’m really looking forward to being apart of the Sleepy’s team.

I love that I’m Following the Sun and I’m really looking forward to finally having a break when I head further north to Hayman Island for a well deserved holiday, it’s been a crazy year so far and I can’t wait to relax.

Below is a photo from the Sleepy’s Mattress conference it’s me with some of the staff from head office.

Adelaide and the Barossa Valley

Filming for Discover Downunder continues with a week in Adelaide and the Barossa Valley. Thanks to everyone’s support the show is a big hit and if you haven’t seen an episode make sure you watch channel Nine at 4pm on Saturday afternoons. The best thing is, if you miss an episode you can watch them all online at the show’s website discoverdownunder.com.au

I had a wonderful time filming in the city of churches and the highlight was definitely the wine making class at Penfolds wines.

Throughout the episode we also visited one of Australia’s biggest Lego collections, it was amazing. Check out some of the photos below.

I’m a huge Star Wars fan and couldn’t believe that I saw the complete collection of Star Wars Lego.

Whilst in Adelaide I also did a keynote speech for Middy’s data and electrical at their annual industry dinner as well as dinner with some of the staff from Top Tourist Parks.

In between filming I have been scrambling to fit in meetings, voice-overs, appearances and promotions for sponsors and ambassador roles as well as getting excited about my son Cooper’s first birthday next month (the year has flown!).

I enjoyed getting up to Sydney, with my sister Jade, for my uncle John’s 50th birthday party. It was great to catch up with the family and show them all how big Cooper was getting.

It was also a great opportunity to spend some quality time with Jade, who is off to France on a water polo scholarship in a couple of weeks.

Until next time.

Filming is go, go, go

Discover Downunder filming is Go, Go, Go at the moment and because I haven’t been home much it’s been wonderful to keep in touch with my family and friends thanks to Telstra via email, phone and text.

I’m fortunate to have all my communication devices hooked up with Telstra and that has been a real bonus when visiting some of the remote locations around the country as I’ve still been able to stay connected.

The last few weeks have continued to be hectic but a lot of fun as the crew and I get to the backend of filming our first series of Discover Downunder.

The locations we have been the last three weeks included The Entrance on the NSW Central Coast which is a place close to my heart as my grandparents have been living in the area for more than 20 years.

We based ourselves at The Entrance and visited Erina, Terrigal, Avoca, Woy Woy and I dropped into Norah Head and caught up with Nan and Pop Hanson for a meal at the Toukley bowling club.

After visiting The Entrance we have spent the last two weeks filming in country Victoria in the towns of Bendigo and Echuca, both places are enriched with history and offer so many different attractions for keen caravan and campers.

I’m loving being a presenter on the show as you get to meet some wonderful people from all walks of life all of which have their own unique story of why they love the open road and what’s so special to them when it comes to touring Australia.

Fitting everything in is a huge balancing act but I’m loving the challenges of being a working mum. I’m still fitting in my speaking engagements, appearances, promotions whilst filming and enjoy spending quality time with both my little boy and big boy.

These photos are a sneak preview to what’s coming up in the next few episodes of Discover Downunder which you can watch on Saturday afternoon at 4pm on the Nine Network!

Three States in Three Weeks

The filming for Discover Downunder continues, over the past few weeks we have continued to visit some great places and meet some fantastic people.

Our filming destinations continue to take us all around Australia and have included three different states in three weeks. First up was Victor Harbour in South Australia we then moved onto Rockhampton in Queensland and then across to Albany in Western Australia.

We are staying at Top Tourist parks and showcasing the best caravan and camping destinations around the country. At each destination we are sampling the local produce and enjoying the best local attractions.

Below are some of the photos of my travels on Discover Downunder. To find out more, visit the website discoverdownunder.com.au and check out the show on the Nine Network at 4pm on Saturday afternoon. For regional viewers make sure you check your local guides. Check out these photos!

Running round at 100mph

Another busy past week for me, we filmed Discover Downunder in and around Port Macquarie in NSW. My favourite activities included strawberry picking at Ricardoes and Hydro golf which was a first for me and so much fun - I can now see why golf can become addictive.

It was then back to Melbourne for my swimming club Nunawading’s 50th anniversary. I had a wonderful night catching up with swimmers, coaches and officials. I feel so special to have made so many lifelong friends from a swimming club that helped me achieve my Olympic dream and Saturday’s celebration reintegrated to me that I’m a very lucky girl.

I saw many people I hadn’t seen for almost ten years and others since I retired from swimming, so it was a fantastic chance to rekindle friendships and enjoy a night out with my hubbie and former Nunawading swimmer Jared Clarke. We met whilst training at the Nunawading pool in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne over 13 years ago so the night was extra special for the two of us.

This week I have been running round a hundred miles an hour collating all the paper work for the end of financial year as well as staying on top of the house work. I recorded voice overs in the WTFN Hawthorn studios for another episode of Discover Downunder and had meetings with my management.

I thought I had left the early mornings behind me when I finished swimming but they continue to get me up and moving. This morning I had a 3.45am wake up call as I was on the first flight from Melbourne to Townsville.

We are filming another Discover Downunder episode in Townsville and I’m really looking forward to the warmer climate as Melbourne has been freezing lately. I’m then heading back to Melbourne and flying to the Gold Coast with my two boys for the 2010 National Austswim Awards Dinner.

Over the past 31 years AUSTSWIM has gained an outstanding national and international reputation for the accredited training and licensing of quality AUSTSWIM Teachers of Swimming and Water Safety. AUSTSWIM has trained over 125 thousand teachers and over 19 thousand of these teachers have completed further AUSTSWIM accredited training in the specialist areas of teaching swimming and water safety to infants, adults, people with a disability and competitive strokes. Both Geoff Huegill and myself are ambassadors for AUSTSWIM and we are both very proud to continually bring recognition to the teachers that are helping Australian kids learn to swim. It won’t be long until my son Cooper will be starting swimming lessons with an AUSTSWIM teacher and I know he will love the water as much as his parents do.

Family, friends and filming

I’m currently continuing my presenting role on Discover Downunder and this week my fellow presenter Tim Smith and I are in North Haven south of Port Macquarie NSW filming activities in and around the region.

The last few weeks have been extremely busy. After filming in the Sunshine Coast hinterlands I returned to Melbourne, then my son Cooper and I both headed back to Queensland but this time the Gold Coast.

I worked in Brisbane at the caravan and camping expo as part of my Dometic Follow the Sun ambassador role whilst my parents took care of Cooper. My husband Jared then joined us and we celebrated his first birthday as a dad with the rest of my family.

The three of us then road tripped to Coffs Harbour where I had a key note speech at a networking breakfast for ETC, Employment, Training and business solutions. Afterwards I spent the morning speaking to some of the local schools to inspire the students to believe in themselves and never give up on their dreams.

We stayed on in Coffs Harbour for another day so that Cooper could spend some time with his great grandparents which was a lot of fun. We then flew back to Melbourne with a bag full of nana’s home made treats for a social weekend catching up with family and friends.

Earlier this week I spoke to the year 8 students at Camberwell Girls Grammar School to kick start their WoW women of wonder week it was an honour to be chosen to talk to the girls about my career as a swimmer and my transition into television. After finishing I did my voice over recordings for another episode of Discover Downunder at the WTFN studio. I also caught up with my sister in law who’s baby is due any day now, I’m so excited for her and very happy that Cooper will soon have a little cousin to play with.

The feedback from the new series of Discover Downunder has been fantastic and if you would like to find out more or watch any of the episodes jump onto www.discoverdownunder.com.au

Better get back to filming

Filming and keeping in touch

Discover Downunder is now showing on the Nine Network at 4pm on Saturday afternoons, we had a launch party for the first episode and it was a fantastic celebration with the crew and their families. This week the third episode will be aired which continues our Western Australian road trip through the Margaret River.

Last week we were filming in Nagambie which is 80 minutes from Melbourne and not far from Shepparton below is a photo of my fellow presenter Tim Smith and myself about to do a closing piece to camera.

This week we are filming on the Sunshine Coast in the hinterlands at the back of Maroochydore – it should be a lot of fun and a nice escape from Melbourne’s cold mornings.

I’m keeping in touch with with everyone through my Telstra 3G I phone which is also sensational for taking photos when we are out on location. I’m staying on top of everything else with Telstra Next G wireless internet, the modem is so easy to use, I throw it in my hand bag, then plug it straight into the USB port in my laptop. It’s great to have, especially for surfing the net and checking emails during peak hour traffic in a taxi on the way to the airport!

The Queen’s Birthday long weekend is shaping up to be a busy one for me with the launch of the Dometic Follow The Sun competition winners caravan makeovers. I will be in Brisbane on Sunday the 13th of June at the Queensland Caravan, Camping & Touring Holiday Show at the RNA Showgrounds, Gregory Tce, Bowen Hills. The launch will be a 2pm but if your a keen camper come along to the Dometic stand for some free giveaways and a chance to win some fantastic prizes.

Apart from my busy time on Discover Downunder I’ve been fitting in some keynote speeches and photo shoots as well as getting my little 8 month old boy Cooper to the swimming pool which is always an adventure in itself but it looks like we have another water baby!

Keep Smiling
